Fire of Unknown Origin is the eighth studio album by the American hard rock band Blue Öyster Cult, released on June 22, 1981, by Columbia Records. Produced by Martin Birch (known for his work with Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple), it marked a commercial resurgence for the band after a couple of lower-selling albums, peaking at #24 on the Billboard 200 and achieving gold certification in the US. The album blends the band’s signature occult-tinged hard rock with more accessible AOR elements, featuring synthesizers and polished production. It’s often praised as one of their strongest efforts of the 1980s, with strong songwriting, atmospheric vibes, and a mix of hits and deeper cuts. Many fans and reviewers call it a classic or even their best work post-1970s.
