Peter Schilling's "Major Tom (Coming Home)" (originally the German "Major Tom (Völlig losgelöst)") is a landmark 1980s synth-pop/new wave track that captures the era's fascination with technology, space, isolation, and existential drift.
The YouTube link you shared points to an upload featuring the English version, with its signature pulsing synths, driving beat, and narrative arc. It's a near-perfect time capsule of early 1980s electronic music—catchy yet haunting.
Background and Creation
Peter Schilling, a West German artist, wrote the song in 1982. He composed the lyrics spontaneously during a drive on the Autobahn in his Opel Kadett, with the instrumental playback running on his cassette deck. The core idea crystallized between the Weinsberg and Kassel motorway junctions in just a few hours.
It draws loose inspiration from David Bowie's 1969 "Space Oddity," which introduced the astronaut Major Tom as a figure lost in space. Schilling's track acts as a quasi-sequel or parallel story: an astronaut who achieves orbit but chooses (or accepts) permanent detachment from Earth. Schilling has noted inspiration from Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey more directly than Bowie's song itself.
The German original dropped in late 1982/early 1983 as part of the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) movement. It exploded to #1 in Germany (holding the spot for eight weeks), Austria, and Switzerland. The English adaptation followed in 1983, reaching #14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #1 in Canada.
