“You’ll Always Find Me in the Kitchen at Parties” is a 1980 synth-pop single by English singer-songwriter Jona Lewie. It was co-written by Lewie and Keef Trouble (also known as Keith Trussell, his former bandmate from Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs). Lewie composed the melody (on a Polymoog synthesizer in his home studio) and added a new storyline ending to Trouble’s lyrics. The track was produced by Bob Andrews, with Lewie handling most of the instrumentation himself; Norman Watt-Roy played bass and Andrews contributed extra hi-hat. Female backing vocals on the recording were by the wives of Andrews and Stiff Records owner Dave Robinson (not Kirsty MacColl, contrary to some claims—though MacColl did sing backing vocals with Lewie live).Chart performance and later use
UK Singles Chart: peaked at No. 16 (11 weeks on the chart).
New Zealand: peaked at No. 3 (17 weeks in the top 40).
Australia: peaked at No. 21.
In 2010 the song was revived for a memorable IKEA kitchens advert (featuring the group Man Like Me performing a version of it in a house made entirely of kitchens, with Lewie appearing as the host). It briefly re-entered the UK chart at No. 71.Lewie is often better remembered for his Christmas hit “Stop the Cavalry,” but this track remains a cult favourite—an affectionate, slightly melancholic portrait of social awkwardness.
