The Last-Minute Hit: In 1970, their record label desperately wanted a single to promote the upcoming Deep Purple in Rock album. After spending a night drinking at a pub, the band wrote and recorded “Black Night” in just a few hours. It ironically became one of their biggest hits, reaching Number 2 on the UK charts.
The Stolen Riff: Bassist Roger Glover admitted that the song’s iconic, driving bass and guitar riff was heavily “borrowed” from Ricky Nelson’s 1962 rockabilly arrangement of the classic song “Summertime.”
The Lyrics: Frontman Klaus Meine—wait, wrong band!—Ian Gillan and Roger Glover penned the lyrics on a napkin at the pub, using the title of an old 1949 blues track by Charles Brown as their thematic anchor.
